Poem

assistant choreographer: Mojca Majcen
costume designer: Olja Mrđenović
light designer: Nuno Salsinha

duration: 17’
premiere: National Theater in Belgrade, 2023.

“Poem” is an opportunity to experience the very special connection that exists between music and dance, to “see” the body as music. This is a way that we can all become the melody, and we can all become the dancer. Rajičić’s score is music full of beautiful rhythms and pulse that simply make you want to dance. The dancers on stage visualize the energy of the music, and show what it feels like to be part of this music, to experience the passion, the love or the peace.
Igor Kirov

Macedonian dancer and choreographer Igor Kirov, studied at the Rotterdam Dance Academy. He performed in many European dance companies and collaborated with important choreographers. Kirov began creating smaller choreographies when he was still a dancer, and in 2006 he was awarded the prize for the most talented young choreographer at the international competition in Nagoya. Since then, Kirov has choreographed for numerous ballet and dance companies around the world.

“O, My Bird, Do Not Fold Your Wings” is a choreographic reinterpretation of the ballet of the same name created by Vera Kostić and Enriko Josif based on the verses of Rabindranath Tagore. My authorial process is primarily a dialogue with the choreographer conducted from the contemporary moment. Desire is taken from the original as the main driver, the fuel for liberation and maturation, for destroying all cages and walls. Desire is both a creative and a destructive force that escapes control and takes the heroine, the titular bird, on a flight from dizzying heights to the painful depths of the soul.
